Access

The municipality of Voio, where the wedding will take place, is located approximately 200 kilometers from the city of Thessaloniki and 350 kilometers from the city of Kavala
Thessaloniki has the nearest airport with frequent flights and Kavala the nearest port with routes to and from the Aegean islands
The greater area is served by the Egnatia highway and we strongly recommend its use
It is recommended, if possible, to use a car, as although bus services are available to and from major cities, they are insufficient in rural areas

About the Area

Basic History

At the northeastern foothills of the Pindos mountain range lies Mount Voio of Western Macedonia and its various mountainous masses, where it forms a natural boundary where the regional units of Kozani, Kastoria and Grevena unite. This area is vast so let us focus our attention to the specific places where mountain and valley meet and become hills and meadows.
These places are full of natural beauty and rich history, but remains unknown to most of the world. I would like to take this opportunity to share them with you. Within the network of semi-mountainous settlements of Voio there are three specific villages that I would like to mention, as they are where I come from. My ancestors came here as refugees from Asia Minor during the population exchange between Greece and Turkey where they were mainly engaged in agriculture.

Koiladi

Κοιλάδι
Koiladi (also written as Kiladi) is one of the most isolated villages in the region. Koiladi comes from the Greek word for 'valley' the village is in a valley between dense and rich oak forest and at an altitude of about 790 meters. The old name of the village was Javaler which loosely translates to 'wild vegetation' in Turkish. I believe both names accurately represent the nature of the village. This is where my maternal grandfather is from.
The Church of the Village
The church of the village, the Holy Church of Agios Georgios (Saint George), where the Sacrament will be celebrated, was built by my great-grandfather the Reverend George Athanasiadis in 1966.
The Stone Bridge of Koiladi
At the bottom of the village there is a single-arched bridge that joins the banks of the Tsavaleriotiko stream, which is part of the drainage basin of Velos, a tributary of the Aliakmon (Haliacmon) river.
Thermal Springs
On the mountain just above the village spring thermal waters that were used for therapeutic purposes in the past but today are mostly forgotten
The Church of Panagia
If we continue further up we will come across the chapel of Panagia (Virgin Mary) which was built from the ground up by my great-grandfather.

Agioi Anargyroi

Agioi Anargyri is the village of my grandmother on my mother's side. The village was previously named Vrostian and then took the name of the parish church of the village in 1927 when it was renamed. It is located at 940 meters altitude on a plateau between the semi-mountainous zone and the highest mountain peaks. The village is surrounded by nut trees the houses have a more traditional style primarily built of stone.

Achladia

Achladia (Greek for pears) is a small village built on the slope of a hill with various fruit trees. It is located at an altitude of about 800 meters and its old name was Mazgan. This is my father's village.

Samos

Samos is an emerald island of the Aegean with rich history, beautiful beaches and is one of the best summer destinations. The bride is from the city of Samos from both sides of her family. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the famous sweet Muscat wine of Samos at the reception.
